Does Your Copy Go Weeeee?

We’re peeling back the curtains to share an internal resource that our writers use when crafting creative copy.

It’s a way to ensure our copy is creative by making it WEIRD, EMOTIONAL, and EASY TO READ -- and then their copy goes wee wee wee all the way to its new home. 🐷 🧱 🐺

W: Weird

Is your copy weird? Different? Unlike the other ads that fill your timeline? GOOD.

The weirder the better! Weird = interesting and engaging.

Make your copy as unique, entertaining, and weird as possible.

Push the boundaries (although weird does not have to be controversial.) Make jokes. Use casual language, colloquialisms, and cultural references. Weird can be as easy as using casual language and writing less formal.

E: Emotional

Does it evoke emotion?

When you read your copy, does it make you feel sad, happy, angry, introspective, upset, or ready to take action?

You should be able to name an emotion by the time you get to the end of the copy.

Use CAPS, ellipses, and line breaks to your advantage. Write the way you want someone to read it, not the way it should necessarily be written.

E: Easy to Read

Is it easy to read?

Would someone with an elementary education understand what you're saying or selling?

Does it use too much industry jargon?

Are there too many long words — or could you swap them for more simple words or phrases?

Do you have any super long or run-on sentences?

Be sure to break up paragraphs and use short, punchy sentences as well as bullet points, lists, or emojis.

Before our writers submit their work to our QA team, we ask they make sure their copy hits all 3 marks. Our QA team does the same thing and makes any adjustments they see fit before sending it off to the client!

That being said, if a client doesn’t want “out-of-the-box” copy and would rather stay formal to connect with a certain audience — they just say the word.
